The gulf that separates amateur photographers from industry professionals is growing smaller by the year. Armed with just an entry-level compact camera and a rudimentary editing package, it is now possible to produce great looking shots almost effortlessly; regardless of your experience level.
Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 makes the process even easier thanks to its simplified interface and innovative tool set. Whether you're a dedicated enthusiast or just enjoy taking an occasional happy snap, you'll find plenty of valuable tools in this easy-to-use program. Our only gripe concerns its recommended retail price. While $150 is certainly affordable, it places the software in direct competition with Adobe's all-conquering Photoshop (albeit in its stripped down 'Elements' guise). Whether Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 is a match for the industry leader is debatable, yet it does offer a far more 'beginner-friendly' experience without skimping on any of the advanced features.
As has become customary for every professional editing application on the market, PSP X2's interface now sports a dark gray aesthetic -- but without the daunting complexity that usually goes hand-in-hand. We really can't stress enough how accessible this program is for the entry-level user. Unlike certain other editing packages which require you to wade through a phonebook-sized manual, Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 can be confidently used directly after installation. This is in large part thanks to the handy Learning Centre sidebar which gives you streamlined information and useful tips whenever you click on a particular icon. In addition, many commonly used functions -- such as perspective correction, noise reduction, photo merging, object removal and isolated colour changes -- have been simplified at the user's end to make life a lot easier. Basically, you don't need to be an expert to get the most from this product; a fact which is sure to appeal to a great many of you.
Indeed, 'making life easier' seems to be Corel's primary goal with this software. We were particularly impressed by the Express Lab feature, which lets you preview and correct dozens of photos at a time by accessing folders on your hard disk drive. This is naturally a far quicker process than opening each image file individually. In the Express Lab window, pics can be tweaked to perfection and then given a rating out of five, making it easier to bring up your favourite shots in the future. Once again, the beginner is duly catered for here via the Suggested Settings tool, which automatically adjusts brightness, shadow, highlights and saturation for an optimum result. (As with any 'auto-adjust' tool though, the outcome will often vary -- especially if an image was close to perfect to begin with.)
Another feature that is sure to please the casual crowd is the Makeover tool, which offers a series of cosmetic enhancements to make your subjects look suitably glamorous. This includes a Blemish Fixer (a nice way of saying 'zit remover'), a Suntan mode (for giving skin a bronzed sheen), a Thinify tool (for sucking in unsightly flab) and a Toothbrush Mode (for brighter teeth). Personally, we find all this tinkering with reality a tad narcissistic and creepy, but if you want to look hot on Facebook or something, these tools are sure to come in handy.
For many budding photographers -- particular in the 'mom and pop' crowd -- computers are the main stumbling block to sharing their output with others. This has been alleviated somewhat by Photo X2's 'Share as Email' button, which allows users to select their photos, adjust the size and send as an attachment, directly from the program.
All up this is a very impressive product which has been tailor-made for emerging photographers who are serious about their pastime. It has been built to grow with your developing skills and for the most part, the road it takes you down is smooth and bump-free.
This is a complex program with an unmatched feature set. It’s not easy, but it is worth the effort. Use the integrated Learning Center to explore the functions. Even with step-by-step instructions, some of the functions like editing text did not produce the expected results. You’ll have to use the traditional drop down menus; the workspace does not include big task tabs to navigate across functions like Adobe Photoshop Elements. However, you can see a preview of all the possible effects to apply to your photo by choosing Browse Effects under Effects in the Learning Center. Previews are large, making it easy to see potential results.
Importing:
Import from a digital camera or scanner. There is also a built-in screenshot capture feature. Make fast work of standard edits in the Express Lab where you can crop, rotate, straighten, remove red eye for an entire imported folder.
Editing:
Paint Shop Pro X2 offers many of the features you can only find in professional editing software. Edit in two modes: the Smart Photo Fix to automatically correct color and lighting, and full edit mode to make adjustments by hand. The batch capabilities in Paint Shop Pro are more extensive than those found in competitors’ programs. Batches are pre-recorded edits like rotate, change color and resize that can be applied to a group of photos or saved as settings to apply to future photos. Find more interesting effects and enhancements in Paint Shop Pro X2 than in any other program. Make collages, apply the effect of 100-year old newsprint, give your subject a makeover, remove or change the color of specified objects, and do all of the other photo edits commonly used in photo editing. And, you can fine tune every adjustment. The text tool is hard to use. To add text, you'll have to type in a text box rather than on the photo itself.
Bonus Features
- Makeover Tools: thinify, whiten eyes and teeth, smooth wrinkles, add a tan, and remove blemishes
- Change the color of a single object
- Erase backgrounds but maintain overlapping fine details like a strand of hair
- Go Retro: Use the Time Machine to make photos look like they were taken from the 1800’s through the 1960’s. You’ll get an informative description of photographic processes at each point on the time line.
- Picture Tubes: Add graphic elements to your photos. The image library is a mixed bag, try the photo images. Click away—objects in the tube vary with each click. Makeup: lipstick, mascara, blush … what’s next? Easily change position and size.
Sharing:
You can print contact sheets and many combinations of photo sizes on one sheet with templates. Send a photo in an email: one click and the email form opens with your selected photo in it. Upload photos to an online photo sharing site. All of these methods are well designed and easy to do. Output Capabilities:
Paint Shop Pro has some professional output features, including image slicing for html. It also has a JPG, GIF, and PNG optimizer for web graphics. You can even save your files in 50 different formats.
Organizing:
The organizing function of Paint Shop Pro X2 is efficient and useful. Drag and drop keyword assignments and click to use the 5-star ranking system. Do the work now and your future searches will be much more efficient.
Help/Support:
Use the Learning Center as you work on photos and projects. This is the easiest way to navigate the site as you learn the program. Conversational language makes task selection easy and speeds program mastery. Corel also offers online help, knowledge base, forums, complimentary email for customer support and technical support by phone for a fee.
Summary:
Paint Shop Pro X2 has editing features found in Adobe Photoshop—not Photoshop Elements—which combine editing and graphics in a program designed for the creative amateur. New features are appealing and engaging. At last, a program that's fun to use. If you want to take your photos into the graphics world, this is the most cost effective way to do it. Yes, you’ll need more time for mastery, but the results are worth it.

I recommend Digeus Registry Cleaner and Windsty Tune Up Suite as they are the best know on the market. They find and fix most of errors in the system than any other. I run them every time when my computer starts crashing or working slow. They also help to prevent and fix Blue Screen of Death problem.
